For our very first project in Sculpture and Ceramics, we were instructed to create a sculpture out of a paper cup. We were given an exacto knife to use to cut up our cup and create our first sculpture. I ran into some challenges while creating mine. My first challenge was figuring out what to make. Before taking this class, the only 3D medium I've ever used is clay, so trying to come up with the initial inspiration to create something was a challenge for me.
The two pictures above are what I created. I used two styrofoam cups in the process. In my opinion, it looks like a wildflower or plant with a fly sitting on top. At the beginning of this project I had no vision so this was unintentional, just a coincidence. One of the problems I faced and so did many of my classmates was that when you cut the styrofoam, it tore into jagged pieces. To prevent this I cut slower and took my time. This way my lines appeared smooth and straight. If I were to do this project again, I would definitely try to have a more defined vision. I work better with a goal in sight and will do whatever possible to achieve this goal. I will work harder to try and come up with concepts for each of my projects in the future.
